Protect Your UAN with a Proven Stabilizer
Article Tags: TRIBUNE
Spring weather can impact soil conditions. From early season moisture to unseasonably cool soil temperature, many issues can affect nutrient availability for crops at planting time. These types of early season challenges can lead to the loss of nitrogen, a critical macronutrient.

Whether it’s through ammonia volatilization, denitrification or leaching, nitrogen loss is a threat to growers’ crops and can impact their optimal yield potential.

A Dual Inhibitor Solution

Growers experiencing both above and below-ground forms of nitrogen loss can turn to TRIBUNE nitrogen stabilizer from Koch Agronomic Services (KAS). TRIBUNE is formulated specifically for UAN and utilizes two proven active ingredients —NBPT and the patented ingredient Pronitridine. As a dual inhibitor solution, TRIBUNE safeguards nitrogen inputs from all three forms of nitrogen loss, offering growers greater peace of mind.

“There’s so much that’s out of the hands of growers,” said Bryce Geisel, KAS senior agronomist. “Leading up to spring, conditions can be difficult to predict. So, when growers can use technology to protect their nitrogen inputs, improve nitrogen use efficiency and take control of a vital piece of the crop life cycle, they should do it.”

How It Works

Backed by more than 25 years of field trials, TRIBUNE’s first active ingredient, NBPT, is a proven urease inhibitor that works to protect crops from above-ground nitrogen loss due to ammonia volatilization. A 2011 study showed that UAN treated with NBPT decreased the percentage of urea-nitrogen lost over 14 days by 13 percent.1

To prevent nitrogen loss below ground, TRIBUNE utilizes Pronitridine to slow the conversion from ammonium to nitrate, delaying nitrification and any potential losses. By holding the ammonium form three times longer than without an inhibitor, UAN treated with Pronitridine keeps more than 60 percent of applied nitrogen in the correct form for plant uptake after 12 weeks. Compare that to untreated UAN which can lose up to 100 percent of nitrogen to nitrification in the same time period.2

4R Nutrient Stewardship

While other products that offer dual protection are suited for any fertilizer source, TRIBUNE is designed specifically to protect liquid urea-based and liquid ammonia-based fertilizers. This has more and more growers turning to TRIBUNE as their ideal choice in treating their liquid nitrogen, as it aligns with the 4R Nutrient Stewardship Initiative.

“Here at KAS, we take land stewardship very seriously, which is why we aim for our products to help growers follow the 4R Nutrient Stewardship framework,” said Tom Barrie, director of Canada sales. “Using TRIBUNE follows the recommendation of the initiative developed by Fertilizer Canada with Right Rate, Right Source, Right Time and Right Place to minimize the environmental concerns related to agriculture, while maximizing economic benefits. Growers are benefiting their community and their bottom line.”

When you take control by treating your UAN with TRIBUNE, you can achieve optimal yield potential, decrease overall environmental impact and protect your profits. For more information about TRIBUNE nitrogen stabilizer, contact your local KAS representative.

Growers have a lot of choices when it comes to choosing a dual inhibitor. It’s important to avoid quick fixes and “too good to be true” solutions. This includes buying into dual inhibitor products that promote effective above and below ground protection when the parts per million (ppm) of active ingredients are not agronomically effective.
